UK dismisses request for Rwandan spy chief to be extradited to Spain over Rwandan genocide: A Britain court dropped the extradition case against Rwanda’s intelligence chief General Karenzi Karake on Monday, 10 August, 2015. The Crown Prosecution Service said the case was dismissed because “the relevant laws on the conduct alleged in this case do not cover the acts of non-UK nationals or residents abroad.” Advisors of General Karake said that “[t]he general has been freed unconditionally after the Spanish authorities conceded that the general has committed no offense that could be prosecuted in both England and Spain.” And a Spanish judicial source said that “the UK was not competent to hear such offences committed outside British territory”. Rwanda’s Justice Minister Johnston Busingye said “General Karake had been the victim of ‘an unjust case,’” in reference to the charged underlying the arrest warrant. General Karake was arrested on a European arrest warrant issued by Spain in June and was on bail in the UK prior to the dismissal of the case. For more information on this issue please click here.
